The Vodafone NZ Music Awards (VNZMAs) are conferred annually by Recorded Music NZ. They started in 1965, making this year’s event the 50th annual NZ Music Awards.
NZ On Air is a long-time supporter of the awards, and for the last eight years has proudly been the Platinum sponsor. NZ On Air also sponsors the Best Video Award and Radio Airplay Record Of The Year. This year NZ On Air also became the principle sponsor of the Critics Choice Prize, a lead up event to the VNZMAs. You can find out more here.
NZ On Air is not only a supporter of the NZ Music Awards, but is a supporter of many of the artists who are finalists for awards - 80% of the artists up for awards on the night have recieved funding NZ On Air.
In 1995 Recorded Music NZ introduced the very stylish Tui (NZ Native songbird) trophy to present to the winners on the night. The Tui is still the current design today.
2007 saw the introduction of the Legacy Award. This award recognises those who have influenced, shaped and advanced popular music in New Zealand. The Legacy Award winner is inducted into the Music Hall Of Fame each year, joining APRA’s annual inductee. This year’s recipient is The Exponents. NZ On Air first supported The Exponents in 1992, funding their music video for 'Sink Like A Stone.'
This year's Awards will be hosted by Taika Waititi and for the first time ever, will be broadcast live on TV3.
NZ On Air would like to congratulate all of this years finalists and the NZ On Air Critics' Choice Award winners Bespin.
